What is a CEC and a CEU?

Continuing education units (CEUs) and continuing education credits (CECs) are earned while attending and completing professional development courses, conferences, or other training.

CECs are often called contact hours; one CEC equals one hour of training.
CEUs are calculated differently, so one CEU equals 10 hours of training.

CEUs and CECs are used to earn and renew certifications. Examples of certifications include
• Certified Healthcare Physical Environment Workers (CHPEW)
• Mechanic Evaluation and Certification for Healthcare (MECH)
• Certified Healthcare Facility Manager (CHFM)
