An ungrounded circuit conductor, according to the National Electrical Code, is a circuit conductor that carries current to the load. In other words, it is the hot wire. Ungrounded conductors shall be clearly distinguishable from grounded and grounding conductors. Ungrounded conductors shall be colors other than white, natural gray, or green; or by a combination of colors plus distinguishing marking.
