What is formalin?

Formalin is used mostly as a preservative. Formalin consists of formaldehyde and water. In health care, formalin is used to preserve tissue from patients for further testing or inspection. Formalin is hazardous and is classified as a carcinogen. Formalin can pose risks of irritation to the eyes, skin, and respiratory system. Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) must be used during handling.
