What is the motor service factor?

The motor service factor (SF) defined by NEMA (National Electrical Manufacturers Association) is a multiplier that, when applied to rated power, indicates a permissible power loading that may be carried under conditions specified for the service factor. The more understandable definition is SF is the percentage of overloading that a motor can endure for a short length of time when operating with the nameplate voltage rating.
