What is an Accrediting Organization (AO)?

Accrediting organizations (AOs) are third-party organizations contracted and recognized by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to confer a healthcare facility’s deemed status through a compliance verification survey process. In other words, they perform hospital surveys for CMS to determine hospital accreditation.

Major AOs Include:

  • DNV
  • Center for Improvement in Healthcare Quality (CIHQ)
